Even the Globe can't ignore these hack-tics

The average public employee already makes 46 percent more in salary and benefits than the typical private-sector worker. But it’s not enough. They want more . . . More . . . MORE.

Not every pension-grubbing hack gets headlines like Billy Bulger. For most payroll patriots, the enhanced kiss in the mail is delivered quietly, in an obscure bill that moves a bunch of them into a fatter pension group.

Here’s how it works. If you’re in Group 1 and you retire after 20 years at age 55 with a salary of $50,000, your pension will be about $15,000 a year. Group 2 is the next level up - for people who may occasionally face risks. So they can go out faster, with higher benefits. A 55-year-old with 20 years and a $50,000 salary in Group 2 can go out at $20,000 a year. You can see how quickly this could add up.

The big score comes in Group 4 - the public-safety category. Just ask U.S. Rep. Bill Delahunt, who, after his election, got his previous employment group - district attorneys - moved into Group 4. Now Delahunt grabs almost as much dough as his pal Hugo Chavez .

H. 1622, the bill moving clerk-magistrates and other courthouse layabouts into Group 2, was filed by Rep. Gene O’Flaherty of Chelsea. One of his constituents recently showed how dangerous an assistant clerk-magistrate’s job can be - James Burke was arrested on charges of shaking down a prostitute for sex in the courthouse. O’Flaherty did not return a call.

Rep. Mike Rush of West Roxbury filed H. 2590 on behalf of those extremely deserving parking-meter supervisers. He’s filed it the last three sessions. It’s gone nowhere, and won’t again this year either. They’ll keep trying.

Full disclosure: I got the idea for pulling these hack-payoff bills from reading a Globe editorial. It’s amusing how the bow-tied bumkissers have seen the light on the hackerama now that their own public sector-like perks are being chopped. I’m just not sure if they’re suddenly worried about waste, fraud and abuse, or just angry because it’s too late for them.

Chaos Constructions!

E-Mail: info@cc.org.ru
